Fires at Dover Court Cases Executions Workhouse Streets of Dover Rambles Harold Rosher Links

Charge of Felony.

Mary Ann Clare a girl about nineteen years of age, was charged on suspicion of having stolen one pair of boots, one pair of trousers. and three pairs of goulashes. The prisoner said she did not steal the things but that they had been taken by “that tall carotty man.” Superintendent Coram said the prisoner alluded to a man who would be brought before the Bench presently upon another charge. The Mayor suggested that it would be better perhaps to take the other charge first but the superintendent said he should be satisfied if the magistrates would hear a short deposition and then if they thought proper remand the prisoner. Sergeant Bayly then said that in consequence of information he received he went to the Eight Bells Public House at half past ten o’clock the same morning.

He found the prisoner there and on asking her to show him her bed he found concealed in it the boots, trousers, and goulashes produced. There were two pairs of goulashes in the bed and the prisoner was wearing a third. He begged for a remand in order that further evidence might be obtained. The prisoner was remanded till Monday. The goulashes were the property of Messrs. Coulthard and Wilson, and the boots had been stolen from the shop of Mr. Fasquel, Boot-Maker, Snargate Street. The owner of the trousers had not been discovered. (1861)
