Fire at Mr. T. Burns – Pawnbroker

A fire occurred at Mr. T. Burns, Pawnbroker, 3 and 4 Tower Hamlets Road on Friday evening. The police received the alarm from a man named Clark at 6-10 and with great promptitude the hose reel from the Police Station was on the spot at 6.15. The stand-pipe was fixed to a hydrant in London Road and a good supply of water was obtained. By this time a very large crowd had assembled but it could be seen that the fire, which was in an upper room of No. 4, would not assume any large proportion. In the meantime the hose reel from the Fire Station also arrived but 6.40 had averted the danger. The fire broke out in the top room of No. 4, which is used as a store for pledges, and a large quantity of clothing was destroyed. Fire and water damaged the drawing room and a back room below. The cause of the fire is unknown, Police Sergeant Harman was in charge of the Fire Brigade and eleven men were in attendance. (March 1893)
